Technology

If you ask any intermediate pupil what they like most about intermediate, they are likely to say, Technology. They enjoy the programmes because they focus on creating and because specialist teachers using special equipment in specially designed rooms or workshops teach them.

At Havelock North Intermediate we have seven technology programmes:

Food Technology
In our specially equipped Foods Room students learn all about food: what is good for them and what they should avoid. Students also learn to use the equipment to design and create their own food products, which of course they get to eat.

Electronics
Electronics is for Year 7 students only. During this programme they learn how electronic components work and how to put them together to create electronic devices. Everyone gets to take home something they have made.

Biotechnology
Biotechnology is for Year 8 students only. During this programme students learn about propagating plants in our nursery as well as how biological organisms can be used to create products like ginger beer.

Wood and Plastics Technology
During this programme students learn about various materials including wood and plastic. They also learn all about design and how to use tools and equipment to create some really interesting things. Once again you get to keep their creations.

Art
During art students learn to use a whole variety of art materials and processes to create some masterpieces. Activities in the past have included making felt, lino carving, sculpture, pastel work, painting, sketching and calligraphy to mention a few.

Media Studies
The world of the Media is opened to students at Havelock North Intermediate through a Specialised Media Studies Programme. Utilising the resources of the TV5 Network students get the experience of reporting, editing and producing news items and then presenting them across the network Live. Skills in Film Production are also developed exposing students to a range of Pre-production tasks. The role of the Media in Society is also critically examined.

Information and Communication Technology
HNI is very well equipped when it comes to ICT with two computer suites as well as  computers and data projectors in every classroom.

When children start at HNI they are given their own username and email address so that they can logon on any computer in the school to retrieve their files, read their email or work on the Internet. You and your child will also be required to sign an Internet Contract in which your child promises to use the Internet appropriately.

Each week students have ICT lessons with a specialist teacher and the class teacher where they learn all about how to use the computer software to help them in their schoolwork. For half the year they will go to these lessons as a half class group. This means each student will get more one to one attention from the teachers(s).

The ICT Programme is designed with emphasis on skill development that will enable students to apply the ICT Research Process across all areas of learning in meaningful contexts. The focus is on
- Word processing
- Internet/Email
- Research projects applying the skills
- Spreadsheet
- Presentation software
- Facsimile
- Scanning/digital imaging

Students are also able to use the main computer suite during lunchtime.
