Sports

If your child enjoys sport and physical activity then he/she is going to love what we have to offer.

The aim at this level is to create new interests. Parents are invited to assist with sports coaching, extension and Outdoor Education activities.

As a Fair Play National Award School we are committed to the principles of the Fair Play National Award which are:
- enjoying games
- playing within the rules
- respecting umpires and referees
- respecting the opposition and their supporters
- being generous winners and dignified losers
- play hard but play fair

These principles are the ideals of true sportsmanship and as a school we promote and expect them in all sporting activities that children participate in.

Apart from regular physical education lessons HNI offers the following:

A favourite of students at HNI is organised lunchtime sport. Each lunch hour classes compete against each other in sports for the House Shield. During the year the following sports are played: Touch Rugby, Volleyball, Netball, Soccer and Softball. We encourage all students to get involved.

Students who are not in one of the teams can always borrow sports gear from the Physical Education Shed to use during the lunch hour.

Each year we have a large number of teams play in different sports competitions either mid-week, after school or on Saturdays. HNI has school teams in the following sports: cricket (boys and girls), netball, hockey, softball, soccer, rugby (boys and girls), 7s Rugby, volleyball, canoe polo, touch rugby. If there are a large number of students wishing to play any sport we hold trials to select the teams. We can usually include everyone who wishes to play but this is only possible if we can get enough coaches and parent helpers. Your assistance as coaches or parent helpers is encouraged.

Please note that although we have school teams in rugby and soccer the Saturday competition is club based.

During the year we encourage all students to get involved in the following sporting festivals: swimming, athletics and cross-country. We use these school festivals to select our school teams for the Super 7 Competition.

Throughout the year our top sportspeople and teams compete in this Inter-Intermediate School Competition in: swimming, gymnastics, rugby, cross country, dance, netball, hockey, soccer, volleyball, softball, athletics and basketball. The Super 7 Shield is awarded to the winning school after each competition. Havelock North Intermediate has always done very well.

Each year we have a Sports Exchange with Masterton Intermediate. During odd years our teams travel to Masterton and during even years they come to us. We compete against them for a shield in the following sports: hockey, badminton, volleyball, rugby, harriers, basketball, netball, table tennis, chess, soccer, touch rugby and swimming. All students are encouraged to try out for the teams.

Students interested in gymnastics are encouraged to join our gymnastics squad. This squad represents the school at the Hawkes Bay Gymnastics Festival.
