International Languages

At HNI students have the opportunity to learn an International Language. They can choose from Chinese, Japanese, Korean, French, German, Spanish, Cambodian culture and Te Reo (if they join kapa haka). This means they can try 2 different languages while they are at HNI. Teachers and tutors teach the children to:
- pronounce words correctly;
- how to greet, farewell and thank people;
- to introduce themselves and others;
- to use numbers 0 100; the days of the week and months and to tell the time.

They also learn some of the customs and festivals for the countrys language they are studying.

Students whom we are unable to place in the programme and/or students who would benefit from a greater focus on English, participate in an alternative programme that focuses on English language (including the culture of an English speaking country).

International Language Learning instruction is provided by Havelock North Intermediate School Staff and outside Tutors. With the exception of French and German, Level 2 instruction programmes are provided at Havelock North High School in the third form as part of their modular programme.

The International Language programme has proved to be very popular and unfortunately we will not always be able to accommodate all students in the programme.
